Morgan Lewis Windmill barbados

Soaring above a historic windmill and the lush hills of the Scotland District.

Our drone tour begins with an intimate look at the windmill’s impressive wooden sails, wind shaft, and main cap frame.

During operation, fabric would be stretched taut across these massive arms to harness the island’s steady trade winds. That rotating wind shaft powers an ingenious system of gears and rollers inside the mill, where sugarcane is crushed to release its sweet juice which is the foundation for Barbados’ famous rum, molasses, and sugar!

As we pull back from the mill, we get a delightful surprise as a flock of white egrets swoops into frame! These graceful herons are a common sight across the Barbadian countryside, and they absolutely love freshly ploughed fields where a feast of insects awaits.

From our side view, the lush hills of the Scotland District unfold before us, and the famous Gravity Hill makes its way down toward the windmill. A stately line of Casuarina trees sways just in front of the mill, playfully stealing some of the wind for themselves.

Morgan Lewis Windmill tells a remarkable chapter of Barbados’ history, a time when this small 166-square-mile island was home to over 500 windmills! These structures powered the production of sugar, one of the world’s most valuable commodities, transforming tiny Caribbean islands into sources of immense wealth for European nations.

Today, the mill is a beloved stop on island tours, and we highly recommend a visit.
